El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, which borders Honduras and Guatemala. Although it is tiny, El Salvador has volcanoes and national parks. El Salvador is known as the “land of the volcanoes”. One of the largest volcanoes in El Salvador is the Santa Ana Volcano; it stands at about 2,381 meters (7,812 feet) above sea level. The Santa Ana volcano has not erupted since 2005, but it is still an active volcano. The volcano first erupted in 1722 and has erupted more than fifty times since 1770. The Santa Ana volcano, also known as the Ilamatepe, is located in the western part of El Salvador. Located in the west of the country within the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, it is part of Cerro Verde National Park, a popular hiking destination. The slopes of the volcano are covered with cloud forests and coffee plantations.
